Why take resume advice from an engineer?

Because I’m not a career coach who learned tech from the outside. I still write production code. Over 12+ years that has meant AI-driven onboarding experiences contributing to $300M in sales, a cross-platform mobile app serving roughly a million users, and frontend test automation that cut a regression cycle from three days to four hours.

The certification came later. I’m a CDI Certified Resume Analyst because I wanted the craft of resume writing held to a standard, not just my opinion as a hiring-side engineer. The combination is the whole point: when I read your resume, I know which of your projects was actually hard, and I know how to make a recruiter see it in six seconds.

Why good engineers get ignored here

“Back home, I got interviews in weeks. In Canada, I’ve been applying for six months without a single callback.” That is the most common message in my inbox, and almost every time, the problem isn’t a lack of skill.

It’s a lack of representation. The North American market reads resumes differently than services markets do. Back home, a resume is a record of responsibilities and tenure. Here, recruiters screen for business impact — scale, ownership, architecture decisions, and measurable outcomes.

A great engineer with a poorly positioned resume loses to an average engineer who communicates value clearly. Most people respond by applying more. That’s not how this market works.

I know because I made the move myself. I came to Canada as an experienced engineer and found out the hard way that strong skills don’t automatically translate — nobody warns you on the way in.

Rebuild your resume

I built a tool called HireDoc that runs my review process as an interview — it asks about your work instead of paraphrasing the page, then rebuilds your experience around the impact you left out.
